TriceratopsĀ is aĀ genusĀ ofĀ herbivorousĀ ceratopsidĀ dinosaurĀ that first appeared during the lateĀ MaastrichtianĀ stage of the lateĀ CretaceousĀ period, about 68Ā million years agoĀ (mya) in what is nowĀ North America. It is one of the last known non-avian dinosaur genera, and became extinct in theĀ CretaceousāPaleogene extinction eventĀ 66 million years ago. The nameĀ Triceratops, which literally means “three-horned face”, is derived from theĀ Ancient GreekĀ words ĻĻĪÆ- (tri-) meaning “three”,Ā ĪŗĪĻĪ±ĻĀ (kĆ©ras) meaning “horn”, andĀ į½¤ĻĀ (Åps) meaning “face”.
TriceratopsĀ has been documented by numerous remains collected since the genus was first described in 1889 byĀ Othniel Charles Marsh. Specimens representing life stages from hatchling to adult have been found. As the archetypal ceratopsid,Ā TriceratopsĀ is one of the most popular dinosaurs, and has been featured in film, postal stamps, and many other types of media.
