Singapore regularly sees devastating natural disasters such as typhoons, earthquakes, tsunamis, and fires. For the people of Singapore there is no stopping mother nature, all that can be done is to be the most prepared as possible for these emergencies. Being prepared may not stop all incidents from happening, but it allows responders to quickly and effectively react to emergencies and better manage the consequences. The challenge is building awareness and enabling remote safety learning so people understand the dangers these disasters pose.
WHAT IS CURRENTLY BEING DONE?
The SCDF actively engages the local community through its wide-ranging public educational programs and community-based activities to enhance the emergency preparedness of the civilian population. Today, the Force is recognized by the population as a professional body of well-trained officers and men geared to respond to all types of life-threatening emergencies round-the-clock. The struggle for the SCDF is creating a solution that can inform and educate the average citizen.
SAFELY SIMULATING DANGER
When a disaster occurs most civilians are confused and terrified as most have never experienced anything close to the chaos and danger that is unfolding around them. How could the Singapore Civil Defense Force create an experience that simulates what it is like to be in a natural disaster in a safe environment?
EON Reality was selected by the Singapore Civil Defense Force (SCDF) to promote emergency preparedness through the use of immersive Virtual Reality technology and remote safety learning. The EON Icube solution has also been integrated with 4D effects such as wind to further strengthen the visitor’s experience. The virtual 3D environment featured is a co-production between Iceberg Design, a leading Singaporean production firm, and EON Reality’s Singapore office.
SAFELY EXPERIENCE DISASTERS
EON Reality’s unique EON Icube technology simulates various emergency scenarios such as typhoons, earthquakes, tsunamis, and fires in a 4-wall immersive VR environment. Through this use of Virtual Reality technology and EON Reality’s interactive Virtual Reality platform, visitors experience the effects of different emergency scenarios in actual scale while in a safe environment.
TRAINING FOR ALL CITIZENS
The EON Reality Icube solution provides a knowledge transfer vehicle that can be used to prepare all citizens, from first responding safety officers to school children. This emergency simulator is easy to use for all citizens, just step into the 4-wall immersive 3D environment and experience an assortment of disasters. With greater awareness of how dangerous these disasters can be, citizens can be better prepared for disasters when they happen and be more likely to take the necessary precautions in the event that there is a disaster.
It is only a matter of time until another natural disaster strikes, but through the disaster simulator the citizens will be better prepared because they were able to experience the effects of different emergency scenarios while in a safe environment. The Virtual Reality environment allows for users to learn faster, remember longer, and decide quicker than reading a traditional safety pamphlet. As mentioned above, being prepared may not stop all incidents from happening, but it allows citizens to quickly and effectively react to emergencies, and better manage the consequences.
