SINGAPORE, February 19, 2014 – The consortium, comprising Aviation Virtual and EON Reality, showcased a mobile unit of their jointly developed Aviation Maintenance Trainer (AMT) at the Singapore Airshow 2014, Asia’s largest and one of the most important aerospace and defense exhibitions in the world. The AMT at the Airshow demonstrated how a trainee can be trained on pre-flight checks that included checking for fuel leaks, landing lights and their switches within the cockpit and removing blanks and streamers all without coming into contact with a physical aircraft. A press article of this unique feature of the AMT, « From reality to virtual: 3D training ‘classroom », was published in the February 12, 2014 edition of the Business Times.
During the VIP tour of the Singapore Airshow on 11 Feb 2014, the Senior Minister of State, Ministry of Transport, Mrs. Josephine Teo tried out the AMT and experienced the realism offered by the Virtual Reality. Many key military, aerospace manufacturers/OEMs, regulatory body and companies personnel who took the opportunity to experience the AMT, were intrigued and responded positively to this new innovation.
The Concept and working of the Aviation Maintenance Trainer
Targeted primarily at the aviation industry, the consortium’s immersive training solution will be the first ever in Singapore and South-east Asia, and promises to provide efficient and effective training in various modes and competency levels of aviation maintenance.
The immersive 3D interactivity of the Icube allows trainees to experience the most realistic spatial representation of the aircraft and the equipment on board. Its interactive nature enables trainees to be mobile and have a dynamic viewing perspective.
The multiple goggles system allows others to view the same 3D perspective of the primary goggle worn by the trainee. This feature allows the instructor to come alongside to coach the trainee. Other participants can also observe the training process before their turn. To further enhance the learning, the basic hand and finger gestures are being developed to replace the existing handheld controller.
The Training Management System, with Augmented Reality capabilities drives the operational use of the Icube and provides administrative control. After the designed course curriculum is loaded, the system ensures that it is followed, and allows managers and supervisors to monitor progression and provide guidance to improve the training plan. The progress tracking allows review of operational statistics, identifies areas of concern with respect to the curriculum and trainees. It can also support the indexing and retrieval of training courses against a set of target competences.
« Effective transfer and retention of technical knowledge are increasingly important as the industry demands industry-ready employees who can apply what they learn to what they do the next day. Aviation Virtual together with EON Reality are proud to contribute to this important aspect of training and development of professional expertise in the aviation sector. I am confident that the use of immersive and interactive 3D Virtual Reality training solutions and management systems will reduce the overall training cost and improve training efficiency, » said Dr. Chong Chee Leong, Aviation Virtual’s Managing Director.
