EyeSim APS improves hand-eye coordination, comfort level in students, while helping them master advanced testing of ophthalmologic dysfunctions
IRVINE, CA, September 11th 2017 – EON Reality Inc., the world leader in Virtual Reality based knowledge transfer for industry and education, with University of Nebraska Medical Center (UNMC) and A Nu Reality, developed EyeSim Advanced Pupil Simulator (APS). EyeSim APS is a virtual reality application that allows medical students to work in a simulated environment to identify and master the ability to perform advanced testing for ophthalmologic dysfunctions, while improving hand-eye coordination and increasing comfort in conducting eye examinations.
EyeSim APS simulates how medication and lighting levels affect dysfunctions involving the pupil of the eye. The pupil is the hole located in the center of the iris of the eye that allows light to strike the retina.
“By adding eye drops to the pupil simulation, students can improve the specificity of their diagnosis and help identify serious conditions. These additions also improve the value that EyeSim APS has for ophthalmology and neurology doctors in training,” said Anu Khanna M.D., associate professor of ophthalmology at Loyola University, owner of A Nu Reality, and one of the developers of EyeSim APS.
“EyeSim provides learners a safe environment for focused, repetitive practice with assessment and immediate feedback from educators, which are key elements to achieve mastery of skills,” said Dr. Khanna. “The virtual patient provides a valuable experiential opportunity for enhancing clinical readiness of medical students and residents and creates a realistic simulation environment for students to practice clinical exams without a burden on the patient.”
The application, designed for the HP Zvr, comes with a special adapter that turns the Zvr stylus into a replica of the handheld light used in eye exams. The intuitive Virtual Reality environment gives the student a sense of presence — as if they were in front of a real patient — which lends itself to better retention, better practice, and improved comfort with the diagnostic process.
“Pupillary examination is a vital component of the physical examination,” said Sachin Kedar M.D., associate professor, Department of Neurological Sciences, at UNMC. “When correctly performed, pupillary examination provides critical information about the neurological and ophthalmological health. The advanced pupil examination simulator is a valuable learning tool. It can be used by learners in all health care areas and at all levels of training, and educators can use the assessment mode to test skill acquisition.”
“The EyeSim APS contains a special stylus adapter that replicates the experience of holding the handheld light used in eye exams,” Dr. Kedar said. “The intuitive virtual reality environment makes students feel as if they are in front of a real patient.”
“With EyeSim APS, students, residents, fellows and providers in medical, nursing and allied health care areas can practice pupillary examination using eight common scenarios,” said Deepta Ghate M.D., assistant professor, Department of Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences, at UNMC. “These include potentially life threatening clinical conditions such as Horner’s syndrome and third nerve palsy.”
EyeSim APS will be launched at the 11th Global Ophthalmologists Annual Meeting in Dubai on September 25th and 26th 2017.
