Well, that was unexpected. With the unveiling of the Legend of the U Jerseys on Monday done, and with the upcoming announcement of the Indoor Practice Facility set for Friday evening at an invite-only event at the Fountainebleu Hotel in Miami Beach, most figured that there wouldn’t be a big announcement in the interim. We were wrong. On Wednesday morning, Miami Athletics announced a partnership with EON Sports VR, one of the leading companies in Virtual Reality content and technology.

This is another move to push the vanguard for technology and content creation for the University of Miami. In 2014, the Hurricanes were one of the first teams in America to introduce Drone technology to practices for football. Now, with a dedicated VR channel — CANES VR per the release — Miami will grow the already strong brand into the next generation of technology. From the release:

The partnership between Miami and EON Sports VR, the world’s leading virtual reality sports training and fan experience company, is among the first offerings nationally in intercollegiate athletics to provide fans with an all-access virtual reality channel.
Miami was the first school to ever have an apparel deal with a shoe company. Miami was among the first to introduce Drone technology into Collegiate sports. And now, Miami is among the first schools to partner with a VR company to provide an all-access VR channel to fans worldwide. More on that from the release:

Through EON Sports’ proprietary technology, the University of Miami can upload dynamic content to their customized VR channel to provide their fans an immersive behind-the-scenes experience in a customized virtual reality environment.

To access the VR channel, Hurricane fans will have the opportunity to purchase a UM-branded VR headset. Practice footage, scrimmages, huddles, and interviews are just a few examples of the types of content to be streamed to the channel.
Adam Pummill, COO of EON Sports VR, had this to say about this new partnership in the above release:

“Fans are always looking for ways to get closer to the action. With Canes VR, they’ll experience content like never before.”
